What is used in a toothpaste is also listed on its packaging so you know what we put inside and what not. There are active and inactive ingredients in a toothpaste. Some are just needed to make sure the paste stays a paste over time or to offer a delightful brushing experience.
 
First, we would like to start with what
you DON’T find in Oral-B toothpastes:
Microbeads:

No Oral-B products in Europe contain plastic micro-beads. We excluded microbeads worldwide as a company in 2017.


Triclosan:

is an antimicrobial ingredient that slows or stops the growth of germs such as bacteria and mildew. Although Triclosan has been used safely in consumer products for decades, we stopped producing toothpaste containing Triclosan in 2012 because we have a more advanced and effective ingredient to ensure oral health.

Anti-cavity, maintains healthy condition of gums, Sensitivity protection Active Ingredient

It forms a micro-thin shield that protects against dietary acids and Inhibits production of plaque.
Helps to: strengthen weakened enamel, prevent cavities, protects against plaque regrowth, maintains gums in a healthy condition and protects against sensitivity and bad breath.

Stabilizing Agent maintains healthy condition of gums, Sensitivity protection Active Ingredient

Helps stabilizing the toothpastes’ formulation.
Helps to: strengthen weakened enamel, protects against plaque regrowth, maintains gums in a healthy condition and protects against sensitivity.

Anti-cavity Active Ingredient

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by slowing the breakdown of enamel.
It incorporates into the enamel structure which is called remineralization.
This increases the resistance to future acid challenges.
WHO, FDI, IADR and CSA have recently reaffirmed the efficacy and safety of fluoride.

Anti-Tartar build-up + Anti Bacteria active ingredient

Eliminates bacteria that cause bad breath, protects against plaque, prevents tartar build-up and cares for gums.

Humectant

Provides a pleasant brushing experience through keeping the toothpaste’s level of viscosity in balance.
It holds ingredients together and helps prevent the product from drying out.

Cleaning

Whiter teeth through cleaning, polishing and gently removing surface stains, while protecting the enamel.
Silica removes surface stains when combined with mechanical action from toothbrush

Humectant

PEG is an ingredient that helps hold components of the toothpaste together. It has high solubility in water and helps with foaming action for a more pleasant brushing experience.
PEG-6 (polyethylene glycol 6) is not to be confused with ordinary Polyethylene, both are different chemical compounds.

Solvent, carrier ingredient

Hydrates and dissolves many ingredients.

pH Buffer

Maintains pH of the product for efficacy and integrity

Flavor & Cooling Ingredient

Aesthetic Component that helps improving the taste of the toothpaste and your overall brushing experience.
Ingredients in the toothpaste that help clean and protect your teeth like Fluoride and abrasives do not taste delicious on their own.

Foaming Agent

Foaming and cleaning agent that helps to dislodge food particles, bacteria and plaque and helps pull stains away from teeth. Even though there are debates about SLS, the way how it is being used in toothpaste is non-problematic.
In fact, SLS has been tested in multiple clinical studies with no indication that it is a contact allergen.
The safety of SLS has not been questioned by the European Commission, nor its expert advisory committee (SCCS), nor by any of the member states.

Stabilizer Agent

Maintains efficacy of Stannous Fluoride by stabilizing it.

Binder, thickener

Delivers the right toothpaste consistency

Sweetener

Aesthetic Component that helps improving the taste of the toothpaste and your overall brushing experience.
Ingredients in the toothpaste that help clean and protect your teeth like Fluoride and abrasives do not taste delicious on their own. While this ingredient gives a sweet taste, our toothpastes do not contain sugar!

Makes a toothpaste sparkle.

Maintains pH for product effectiveness.

Makes toothpaste white

It is an ingredient frequently used in cosmetic products as a colorant. Creates the white look of a toothpaste.
Even though there are debates about Titanium Dioxide, the way how it is being used in toothpaste is non-problematic.
It is safe to use as per EU Cosmetics Regulation.

Foaming Agent
